ALBUM RELEASE

Afro Reggae Rumble Napoli

THE ALBUM

Released on October 30, 2021 the songs are available in streaming on Spotify and Bandcamp.
The songs were recorded
in the studios of Yellow Submarine Music Center based in Naples, after several years of work.

Produced together with Vittorio Nicoletti Altimari, Yardman’s music tutor and close friend, with which organized the band and played in many of the pieces on the album.

From Naples to the globe!

Yardman’s voice returns to his brothers in Gambia, to his cousins in America and to his soul friends around the world!

His songs speak of friendship, cooperation and unity.

Inspired by reggae music for the cheery rhythm and the messages of universal peace that this brings with it; the lyrics recall the value of men who defend freedom, such as that of Kunta Kinte, an African boy kidnapped and sold as a slave in America in 1767.

Two hundred years later, a fellow citizen has struck a better fate. He is adopted and nourished musically by “mama” Napoli.

Kunta Kinte has been freed!

Works

AN ARTISTIC AND MULTICULTURAL PROJECT

Started in 2016, year after year it is enriched with new contents and participations. Nafrithm, Sooner or Later and Cabeng Band represent the works so far realized.

Today, the Cabeng  has a steady band a number of other artists who, at various levels, give their professional contribution.

Works are totally independent and self financed.

MEANINGFUL MESSAGES

One of the songs is called Slave Trade and is a dancing mellow piece filled with warm Afro choirs, that seem to commemorate with extraordinary peace of mind, the souls of the martyrs of racism.

The text, written partly in Wolof and partly in English, mentions the names of Stephen Bantu Biko, an anti-apartheid activist who died after painful and humiliating tortures in prison; Malcolm X murdered for his anti-racist actions and Kunta Kinte himself.

Sad but true, this song was recorded with the participation of Mohamed Benali, a Senegalese singer burned alive in a hut in Puglia (South of Italy) in 2020, yet another victim of illegal recruitment in farmlands. Just as Slave Trade, the other tracks of this album contain important references to humanity, equality and cooperation between men while the rythms encourage people to sing and dance together.

YARDMAN LIKE A GRIOT

A Griot knows the power of words, and in Africa words are sacred: a creative force that activates and organizes the universe, humans and things. A living vehicle of tradition.

Because a story is a story; and you may tell it as your imagination and your being and your environment dictate; and if your story grows wings and becomes the property of others, you may not hold it back. One day it will return to you, enriched by new details and with a new voice. This particular characteristic of folktales is illustrated in the traditional conclusion of the Ashanti narrator: “This is my story which I have related, if it be sweet or if it be not sweet, take some elsewhere and let some come back to me”.

– [ “Favorite African Folktales” – Nelson Mandela ] –

biograPHY

He lives in Naples since 2014, a globetrotter with a free spirit. His songs contain messages of freedom, respect and food for thought about himself and life. From a very young age he approached the world of music. The passion for reggae becomes a way of life: music to share, to tell what one experiences, what one sees, an outcries to injustices. At a early age he associates with friends from musical environments where he gets lots of inspirations and where he begins to define his own style. Yardman, his stage name, is actually his nickname given by these friends, for his inclination to entertain in festivals and gatherings, sharing both life and music experiences. In 2007, during one of these meetings the idea of forming a band and undertaking the study of the electronic keyboard made its way. So the Bright Star Band was born, composed of 7 musicians that lead them to play in the best locations in Gambia.

When he’s on stage, performing live concerts and gigs, he shows all his stamina and liveliness, singing with such warm and hoarse voice.

In 2014 he emigrated to Italy and settled in Naples, a city that he loves and to which he dedicated one of his songs: Forza Napoli. Here too, he plunged into the world of music, with a wish that finally came true: to publish an album of his own.

Biography written by Imma Passannanti.

MUSICAL CAREER IN NAPLES
Yardman entered the circle of musicians in Naples by enrolling in the Migrant Talents Laboratory, held by the Cultural Association Rete Co’Mar and supported by the Municipality of Naples and the Social Enterprise Less Onlus (SPRAR program, IARA), rehearsing and recording at the studios Yellow Submarine Music Center.

MEDIA SECTION

NAFRYTHM MUSIC PROJECT

Out of the frequent meetings, jam sessions and recordings, the project Nafrythm (Naples, Africa, rhythm) was born. The band, in which Yardman performs, has gathered musicians from different countries (Italy, Nigeria, Gambia, Senegal, Mali, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Mozambique). In addition to many concerts in Italy, Germany and Nigeria, the songs became an album called Ocean.
